Brooke Burke on Why She and Fiancé Scott Rigsby Haven’t Married Yet (Exclusive)

Brooke Burke is opening up about why she and fiancé Scott Rigsby haven’t walked down the aisle yet.

On Saturday, June 1, the Dancing with the Stars alum, 52, and her commercial real estate developer fiancé hosted Operation Smile’s Malibu Family Fun Fest fundraising event at their California home. Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE, Burke and Rigsby explained why they are still in the wedding planning process — nearly three years after getting engaged in 2021.

“He’s sick of me not having an answer, honestly,” Burke joked, responding to a question about how often she gets asked about their nuptials. “I’ll be honest, and I haven’t told this to anyone, so we still have something original.”

According to Burke, the couple had planned to get married just last month, but their big blended family got so busy that it didn’t end up working out.

“We hoped to get married in May, and May came and went quickly,” she recalled, before detailing all the big events that have kept her family’s schedule packed. “School, two of our children turning 16, getting their driver’s license, Sierra graduating from USC. Neriah was supposed to be on tour. We finished building our home in Arizona.”

“We didn’t have a minute to breathe, let alone plan the greatest party of our life,” she continued. “So back to the drawing board, and now we need to get really busy.”

Rigsby told PEOPLE that the pair are hoping for the ceremony to be extra special, which is why they have decided not to rush things.

“I think for us, it’s having the experience. I mean, the whole reason to do it, too, is for the kids and for us and the family. So we want to do it right. We just don’t want to rush into it,” he said, before Burke chimed in: “Yeah, I’m not rushing.”

“I said we could always go get married on a weekend or plan something quick, but we want to just do it right,” Rigsby continued.

Burke added that despite the couple waiting a few years before celebrating their official wedding ceremony, they already “feel married.”

“We started planning and scouting, and all of my daughters are really passionate about this,” she continued, sharing some of the wedding details — including a potential nature theme for the ceremony.

“We have a pretty great idea and want to do something that’s experiential and in nature and special and meaningful and amazing,” she said. “So it’s not going to be a small wedding, which is the reason why it requires a lot. But honestly, the season, Neriah being on tour, the kids graduating, it’s just been … we just can’t get a turn.”

The TV personality also opened up about her vision for her bridal look for the ceremony, noting, “My dress is going to be so big. It’s going to be blowing in the wind.”

Burke shares daughter Rain, 16, and son Shaya, 15, with ex-husband David Charvet, as well as daughters Neriah, 23, and Sierra, 21, with ex-husband Garth Fisher. Rigsby also has two kids of his own.

The couple — who made their red carpet debut together back in 2019 at another event supporting Operation Smile — got engaged in September 2021, just after Burke’s 50th birthday.

Brooke has teased details about their upcoming wedding in recent months, telling PEOPLE in an October 2023 interview that they were “committed to 2024.”

“We really wanna design a wedding that we can enjoy — that’s not just a big party for show,” she said at the time. “For me, it has to be meaningful or not at all, which is the challenge. To do something fabulous and grand and keep that intimacy and keep it special.”
