If you’re job hunting this year, you’ll probably have noticed that the job market isn’t quite as busy as it was during the pandemic, for example.
While U.S. employers added 175,000 jobs in April, this is actually the smallest number in six months. The month of May did a little better, adding 272,000 new jobs into the economy.
The good news is that a cooling of the previously hot job market may help with inflation, but on the other hand, it could signal a bit of a worry for Americans who are out of work, or who are in the market for a new job.
Within tech, some roles remain in robust demand — think cloud, DevOps and data, for example — but job search site Indeed has found that the number of job postings for software roles has tapered off somewhat. However, there has been a 15.7% increase in the number of AI-related postings.

And where you look for those roles is important too. Some U.S. cities offer more opportunities for tech workers than others. StartupBlink’s most recent Global Startup Ecosystem Index outlines the cities which have the best potential for early stage companies. And where there are a lot of nascent tech companies, there are jobs.
Top cities for talent
Unsurprisingly, San Francisco wins out. It continues to lead global startup ecosystems, according to the report.
It says that San Francisco’s enduring leadership in global rankings is now due to its dominance in AI startups. Companies such as ServiceNow, Udemy and Datadog are all based here, as are Qualtrics, Grammarly and Snap Inc.
New York comes in second place globally, as well as nationally. As the world’s largest global financial center, the Big Apple is also home to 6,000 startups and 119 unicorns.
Also included in StartupBlink’s “big 6 cities list” are Los Angeles in fourth place, and Boston in sixth place. These cities are just some of the metro areas that are fostering startups, however.

In 12th place is Seattle, with Chicago in 15th spot. Austin comes in 17th place with startups that include celebration platform Joy, Macromoltek, which aims to revolutionize antibody design, and satellite company Albedo.
Also in the top 30 is Miami, which, along with Tampa and Orlando give Florida a strong showing when it comes to its startup ecosystem. The state is home to a host of interesting startup and scale-up businesses like Novo, a digital banking platform, and Pipe, a global trading platform that facilitates the exchange of recurring revenue streams. OneOf is a new green NFT platform, and NUE Life is a mental wellness firm.
More U.S. cities performing globally
Minneapolis now ranks at 42nd globally, representing the steepest jump among North American cities in StartupBlink’s top 50, marking its best position since 2020.
Wilmington has also achieved its highest position since 2020, and now ranks 61st, globally, and Nashville and Las Vegas also both improved their global rankings. Lastly, Boulder, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Baltimore, Columbus and Kansas City are all in the top 100 cities for startups too.
