Kate Middleton, Prince William Change Profile Photos on Social Media

Kate Middleton and Prince William refreshed their presence on social media after the Princess of Wales shared that she completed chemotherapy.

As of Sept. 10, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ joint official accounts on Instagram and X were updated with a new profile photo for the first time in a while. The new image across both platforms is a still from the personal video message that Princess Kate, 42, released on both sites to announce that she has finished chemotherapy treatment, which began in late February.

The picture is a still image from the video filmed by Will Warr in Norfolk in August, and showed a tender moment between Prince William and Princess Kate. The shot — one of several cozy moments between the royal couple in the video! — captured the pair sitting on a blanket in the woods together, holding hands and sharing a laugh. The Prince and Princess of Wales wore casual clothes and sneakers, as their children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, did throughout the video.

The three-minute montage was an unprecedented glimpse into the Wales’ family’s private life, and the couple also switched their cover photo on X to a still from the video showing them as a family of five.

The video message was a major update from Princess Kate, in which she described it as a “relief” to “have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment” and acknowledged that “the last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family.”

“Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” the Princess of Wales said in part, seemingly referring to her loved ones.

“With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything,” she said.

William and Kate don’t frequently update their profile photos on social media, but sometimes switch their cover picture on X for news around their work, such as the Prince of Wales’ Earthshot Prize. The couple are known to strike a more solemn tone on social media in November for Remembrance Day, a Commonwealth holiday honoring those who died in war, but usually change the photos back to what they had been after about a week.

For years, Prince William and Princess Kate’s profile photo has been a laughing candid from a trip to Ireland in 2020.

They’re not the only royals to swap out their social media photos now and then — King Charles and Queen Camilla do the same. The King and Queen have had Chris Jackson’s iconic shot of them looking out from the balcony of Buckingham Palace in the coronation regalia on their May 2023 coronation day as their profile picture on X and Instagram for over a year.

Following the Princess of Wales’ Sept. 9 announcement about completing chemotherapy, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said that King Charles, 75, and Queen Camilla, 77, “consider the details in today’s announcement to be wonderful news and will continue to offer all love, thoughts and support to The Princess on her continued path to full recovery.” The King continues to undergo treatment for cancer.
