Judy Greer, Julie Benz Open Up About the ‘High School Politics’ of Filming Jawbreaker: ‘Very Tough Shoot’ (Exclusive)

The cast of the ’90s’ teen comedy Jawbreaker couldn’t be more thrilled to be celebrating the cult classic 25 years after its theatrical release.

Judy Greer, Julie Benz, and Rebecca Gayheart reunited on July 12 for the film’s silver anniversary at a party thrown by Planoly and F.L.U.I.D. following a screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

“It was really cool to see it in such a big theater, on film, and the whole house was just fans of the movie,” Greer tells PEOPLE exclusively about Jawbreaker‘s enduring legacy. “People say, ‘Why do you think this movie is so relevant still?’ And I’m like, I don’t totally know, but I know that people love it and still talk to me about it, and strangers are always quoting lines to me and wearing T-shirts with my face on it.”

“I think you can see that we still have all maintained a friendship and support each other through the years in the business, which is a lot like high school,” Benz notes about how the cast have only gotten closer over the years. “It was a very tough shoot. And the politics of high school kind of filtered down through the cast, as they often do when you’re playing high school students.”

Benz credits Gayheart for keeping the cast bonded during filming, adding, “Rebecca really was the heart of the cast. She kind of kept us all together. Whenever I see Rebecca and Judy and [film director] Darren Stein, it’s like no time has passed. We just pick right up.”

Jawbreaker follows the drama that ensues after a popular clique of high school students accidentally kill their best friend in a prank-gone-wrong, and also stars Rose McGowan and Pam Grier. “I just was so excited to be in a movie and I didn’t know anything,” says Greer, who was still bartending in Chicago when she landed the role, and found herself awestruck by her more experienced colleagues. “They were all stars to me and I was really nervous and didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it because I’d really only done two movies and I was trained to be a theater actress.”

“Rose and Rebecca were the big stars. I was a working actress, and Judy was fresh out of theater school,” Benz recalls about her fellow actresses. “Rose was just so glamorous and she was just like a spectacular creature in my mind… and then Rebecca is just stunningly beautiful, and just so kind and so sweet.”

Much like their characters in the film, the women donned candy-colored ensembles for the event, which was hosted by Planoly, a social media management platform built for creators by creators, and LGBTQIA+ film fund and production studio F.L.U.I.D. Benz admits she wanted the cast to coordinate to make up for their experience at the original red carpet premiere.

“None of us talked about what we were wearing to the premiere. You had to gatekeep all that stuff,” she says. “You were told not to share that information, but now we’re in a different era. For tonight, we were all sending pictures, because I didn’t want us all showing up in black. How boring is that? This is Jawbreaker!”

The women were so enamored with their costumes from the film that they each snagged a few items from set. “I had some clothes for a little while, but I don’t remember what happened to them,” Greer reveals. “I had one of my ‘Vylette’ posters and I think it’s in a big tub of work mementos.” Adds Benz, “I got to keep one outfit and it was the red, lacy, yellowy-orange top and skirt, and I think I wore that like 80 times until it fell apart. I loved that outfit.”

Benz shares that there is one item she wished she’d kept despite the problems it gave her during filming: her “Foxy” necklace. “I had one made for tonight,” she explains. “But that necklace and my skin didn’t like each other. I developed a big rash from it.”
