All About Jamie and Dan Burrow

Joe Burrow followed his father and two brothers — Jamie and Dan — into football.

Jamie and Dan are older than NFL star Joe, being a senior and a freshman in high school, respectively, when Joe was born. They both played football in college, but didn’t get as far in their careers as their younger brother.

Jamie, who along with Dan would refer to Joe as “Super Burrow” growing up, told The New York Times in 2019, “He has all of our strength and none of our weaknesses. Joe got all the football IQ, competitive drive, leadership and intelligence. And then he got another level of athletic build and skill set.”

Discussing Joe’s rapid rise, Jamie told the outlet, “This would be on the upper end of what we thought was possible, but I’d be lying to you if I said I thought it could never be a scenario.”

Despite the age gap, the three brothers are all close, and Jamie and Dan frequently support Joe in his NFL career.

From their college football experiences to their careers and families, here’s everything to know about Joe Burrow’s brothers, Jamie and Dan.

They grew up in Iowa

Per WSAZ, the family would often move when the boys’ father, Jimmy Burrow, accepted a new coaching job. Joe was born in Ames, Iowa, when Jimmy was on the coaching staff at Iowa State University. Jimmy coached in Iowa from 1987 until 2000, so Jamie and Dan spent much of their childhoods in the state.

Jamie and Dan are both older than Joe

When Joe was born in December 1996, Jamie was a senior in high school and Dan was a freshman. Of the large age gap, Jamie told The New York Times, “It’s almost like Dan and I were not his brothers. We were sort of like these hybrid uncles.”

When Jamie returned home from college, he would sometimes babysit Joe, but wouldn’t always pay attention. Instead, he would put A Bug’s Life, Joe’s favorite movie, on TV and have a nap, sometimes discovering that Joe had crawled up the stairs, per the outlet.

In addition to Jimmy playing and then coaching football — something he continued to do until 2019 — many of the brothers’ other relatives played sports at a high level.

Per Sports Illustrated, the brothers’ athletic pedigree dates back almost a century. In the 1940s, their paternal grandmother, Dot Ford, set a Mississippi high school record with an 82-point game in basketball, while their paternal grandfather, James Burrow, played basketball at Mississippi State University. In the 1980s, their uncle Johnny Burrow played football at the University of Mississippi.

All three of the Burrow brothers followed their relatives into football, not just Joe. Per The New York Times, Jamie was a linebacker at the University of Nebraska from 1997 to 2001, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors in his senior year. Dan also played for Nebraska, from 2000 to 2004.

Post-college, both brothers now work in medical sales. Jamie is also an investor in the Omaha, Nebraska, restaurant Early Bird, per WAFB. Trisha Goode McFadden, who had worked with Jamie before, set up her own Early Bird restaurant and told This Is How We Do Des Moines, “One of my franchisees from Massage Heights was Jamie Burrow, and he opened Early Bird in Omaha. I did a consult with him at his restaurant and was blown away. The food was amazing, the environment was chill and friendly, the vibe was really good.”

Jamie told The New York Times in 2019, “We’re about as close as you can be, considering the age difference.”

When Joe won the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in college football that same year, both of his brothers came to the trophy presentation. Dan said about his brother’s success that year: “It’s been special for so many reasons. It really has brought our family closer. We are so spread out — in Texas, Ohio, Nebraska, Louisiana — that I’ve probably seen my dad and my brothers more this year than in any two- or three-year period over the last 15 years.”

Jamie and Dan were also there when Joe was recruited by the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2014, and when he transferred to the Louisiana State Tigers in 2018.

Both brothers are married, and Jamie has two sons

Jamie lives in Omaha with his wife, Codie. They have a son, James, and a daughter, Bowen, while Jamie is also stepfather to Codie’s son from a previous marriage, Charlie. Jamie and Codie started the organization Delivering Hope to support people experiencing infertility.

Dan proposed to his wife, Jama Cash, in 2019. They met in 2018 when Dan traveled to Auburn to watch Joe’s third start for the Louisiana State Tigers, per The New York Times.
