‘One Tree Hill’ Cast on Where Their Characters Would Be Now

The cast of One Tree Hill has some predictions about where their characters might have ended up.

During a Q&A event held to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the CW series’ premiere in 2003, cast members including Lee Norris, Paul Johansson, James Lafferty and Bryan Greenberg spoke about what they think their characters might be up to, two decades after the show began — and whether or not they would return for a series reunion.

Johansson, who played Dan Scott — the sometimes villainous father of Chad Michael Murray‘s leading man Lucas Scott — joked that he is “done with Dan.”

“I moved on. But I had a good time playing him and I was honored to be given such an interesting character,” Johansson, 60, said, earning laughs from the crowd.

“But he’s gone, and it’s best to leave him where he’s resting next to Wade,” he added to more joking “boos” and “awws” from the audience — referring to the abusive father of Chuck Scolnik’s character.

“Where would he be today? Well, I’d be running for president — if you get my meaning,” Johansson finished.

As for Nathan Scott, the brother of Lucas Scott and Dan’s son, James Lafferty — who wore a No. 23 jersey to the event in honor of his character’s time as a basketball player — said that it would be “very interesting to know what Nathan is doing now.”

“I think it would be great if he stayed with Haley and had a family and is all good,” Lafferty, 39, said, referring to his character’s girlfriend and eventual wife, portrayed by Bethany Joy Lenz. “I think it’d be cool to see where his agent-ing career is now.”

Greenberg, who played Jake Jagielski — one of the Scott family’s fellow Tree Hill Ravens basketball players — joked that he thinks his character was still facing some legal troubles, after Jake was shown going through a lengthy custody battle over his daughter Jenny and other run-ins with the police.

“Jake, I think, is still on the lam,” Greenberg, 46, said to more laughs. “Hiding out in Panama, playing guitar at a little beach bar waiting for Jenny to come get him. She’s grown — she’s sending me money.”

“I have no idea,” he admitted, before teasing a possible revival or reboot. “But maybe we’ll find out, because I hear there are maybe things happening.”

The cast’s discussion of a possible reboot comes just one day after costar Hilarie Burton Morgan revealed that she had been involved in the development of the potential new series.

The actress, 42, told PEOPLE that she has been working with a female-led team “this go-around,” and said it “is proving to be a healthier experience for her than the original series (after 18 former female cast and crew members previously accused One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn of sexual harassment).

“What I can say is that this go-around, being able to work with a team of women and look at these stories [and] these characters through a female lens is something that — whether I was doing a reboot or a brand new show or a different movie at this phase in my life, female teamwork is something that is so vital to me,” Burton said.

Also spearheading the reboot is her costar Sophia Bush, who spoke about the news of a reboot getting leaked earlier this year on her Drama Queens podcast.

“Do I wish that the news hadn’t leaked before we could announce it was official? Sure. But if it happens, I will be so freaking proud, much like we said, that every single person gets to bring their expertise to the table now,” she said earlier this month.

While Bush, 42, noted she “can’t tell anyone anything” quite yet, she teased a few details about the new series, which PEOPLE previously confirmed was in the early stages of development.

“What I can say is that after, God, close to half a decade of these conversations, we’ve been able to all sort of divide and conquer in the coolest way. And those of us with TV producing experience are having some really exciting conversations,” she revealed.

One Tree Hill can be streamed in full on Hulu and Max.
